Harbor House Community Service Center has been serving the Southwest Harbor and Tremont area since 1965 providing a multitude of sports and community activities. The common objective is to use sports as a medium to bring out the best in our young athletes in this rural American setting. Our instructors are volunteers who teach sportsmanship, teamwork and skills, while providing a fun safe environment.

We can't do it alone we need all the help we can get. As a private/public non-profit organization we rely on financial support not only from fees and the town gifts but also from local and corporate businesses. Unfortunately there are some who cannot afford the fee for each sport, but we believe that everyone should play. The Brennen Lowe Scholarship Fund was set up to help pay the registration fees for these children. Feel free to send in a tax deductible donation in Brennen's name. Every little bit helps. Remember if you want to change the world start with the children in your community.

Great Harbor Shootout Basketball Tournament
Harbor House Community Service Center is preparing for its 17th annual Great Harbor House Shootout. The competition brackets will be filled with teams from around the state, Visitors, as well as players, will be making plans for their trip to the Ellsworth/Mount Desert Island area.

The Great Harbor House Shootout is more than a great Maine-wide community basketball tournament - it is an economic boon to the Ellsworth, MDI and surrounding communities. Local businesses will be gearing up for the athletes, coaches, and fans that will descend upon Mount Desert Island on the third weekend in March 2009. With 60+ teams participating annually, several thousand people will be eating, shopping, and looking for lodging in the area.

What began in 1992 with seven boys' teams of high school-aged players, has now grown to become "Maine's premier post-season basketball tournament." Division games for high school boys, high school girls, junior high boys and junior high girls are played in five locations; including the YMCA in Bar Harbor, MDI High School, Mount Desert Elementary, Trenton Consolidated School, and Southwest Harbor's Pemetic Elementary School gymnasium.

Harbor House and our business partners encourage local fans to come out and support their MDI teams. Harbor House always needs volunteers to help with the weekend's events. Please come and join the fun!
