The original motivation behind the Harbor House was to provide a safe and supervised environment for young people to socialize when they weren’t in school. Today that original intent continues to be met, in part, by the Underground Youth Center. The youth center gets the majority of its funding through town appropriations from both Tremont and Southwest Harbor, which allows us to offer most of our activities to the community free of charge.

The Underground game room is open on a drop-in basis for youth in grades three through eight every day after school from 3:00 to 5:30. Game room highlights include ping-pong, foosball, bumper pool, and Wii games, in addition to a nice selection of board games and arts supplies for kids to use while hanging out.

The Underground is staffed by an adult at all times, and is free of charge. Parents simply need to register their children as members of the Underground by filling out a one page form that provides emergency contact information. The form can be picked up at the Harbor House or downloaded from our web site. The Harbor House also provides free transportation from the Tremont school to all Underground activities.

In addition to the game room, the Underground Youth Center also provides a regular schedule of more structured activities, including hikes, arts programming, a chess club, movie nights, and field trips. Be sure to check out our schedule for special activities for current offerings.
