Founded in 1965, Harbor House is a community house, serving all the people of Mt. Desert Island. Harbor House is home. It is here that our love of community finds its fullest expression. Every Harbor House program and activity springs from our common ideas, ideals and individual contributions.

With six key program areas and a roster of more than 60 health, fitness, educational, sports, community-based and youth-focused classes and activities, Harbor House serves every age group and every economic level.

Winter is here! For those that need help the MDI Community Campfire Coalition is here!

The MDI Community Campfire Coalition is made up of a group of non profits, which include Harbor House, The Neighborhood House and The Maine Seacoast Mission. The coalitions mission is to provide heating and weatherization assistance to families in need during our harsh winters. The MDI Community Campfire Coalition is gearing up for the upcoming winter season. As proved true last winter, many of our neighbors on Mount Desert Island will struggle to stay warm and meet their basic needs. Winter on MDI is forecast to be a hard and long one. Layoffs, downsizing, belt tightening, and the continuing economic slump make the work of the MDI Community Campfire Coalition all the more important this season.

Back To School

New After School Program! Crystal Noyes will be running the NEW! After School Program in the Old Yellow School House beginning Tuesday, September 7 For students in grades K-2. Transportation will be provided for students from Tremont. Cost is $45.00 per week For more information or to get a registration form, call the Main Office at 244-3713.

Children's Center News

We're Back to School!

The new school year is well under way at the Children's Center! The staff here can help your preschooler develop the skills necessary for a successful transition to kindergarten. Our staff will get to know your child and assess his or her strengths based on the Maine Early Learning Guidelines. Daily activities are carefully planned to meet the needs of each child in the class.

We still have a few spaces available in each of our classrooms: Ladybugs (ages 18-36 months), Busy Bees (3-4 years) and Dragonflies (those children who will attend Kindergarten in the fall of 2012).

Tuition assistance for our childcare/preschool program is available for those who qualify through our Community Development Block Grant. For more information, call the Center at 244-9824 and ask for Mary Ellen.

Health & Fitness News

Are you age 55 or up and want to get started on a exercise program? Consider trying our Active Older Adults class. This class is free with a membership and happens every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9-10am. The Fitness Center is closed to the general public during this class. An instructor is present to demonstrate proper technique and lead the group for a 15 minute stretch at the end of class.

You asked for it and she delivered! Mary Kate Murray is offering an evening class of Anusara Inspired Yoga. What better way to end a long day? This class will be held on Thursdays from 5-6:30pm upstairs at the Old Yellow Schoolhouse. In addition, Mary Kate will offer class on Monday and Wednesday mornings from 9-10:30am.

Due to damage in the Pemetic Gym the Basketball schedule has been modified.

8:15 am until further notice
