Lobsters on the Sound

What started as a benefit party for Harbor House Community Service Center has evolved into one of the top fundraising events of the year on Mount Desert Island. This community celebration originally started to say goodbye to one executive director, welcome a new one, and celebrate Harbor House’s 40th anniversary.

In 2005, when the benefit started, there was concern that the event would have a difficult time gathering 200 people together and that the event wouldn’t be successful. Five short years later – Lobsters on the Sound attracts over 400 people and is planned by a dedicated group of women dubbed, “The Lobster Ladies Committee.”

First initiated in 2008, the Lobster Ladies Committee has grown to include over 40 women, with a “hard-shell” core group that meets throughout the harsh winter months to discuss ideas for silent auction themes and new ways to improve the event and make it more unique.

This laid back, boat casual event features a cocktail hour with hors d’oeuvres from many local restaurants, a downeast style lobster bake, live and silent auctions, and music and dancing under the stars at the home of Harbor House Board Member and patron, Jackie Montfort’s, Invermeade on Fernald Point Road.
